Sofia, Bulgaria

We have arrived in Sofia and are staying in a lovely hotel. We had a welcome package in our room from our guide containing some handy information about Bulgaria and the Bulgarian language. I think we are going to need all the help we can get with the language.

These pictures are of the St Nikolaj The Miracle Maker Church.

Next is the Saint Alexander Nevski cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

This is Europe's third largest synagogue.

This is the National Theater, Bulgaria's largest theater as well as its oldest. It was completed in 1906.

And how about this fearsome guy?

This is Saint Sofia. She is made of copper and bronze, is 24 ft high, and stands on a 48 ft pedestal. She is adorned with the symbols of power (crown), fame (wreath) and wisdom (owl).
