Kazanlak

On our way to the Black Sea we stopped off in an area that was once home to the Thracian Civilization.

The Thracians were a group of European tribes inhabiting a large area in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The first historical record of the Thracians is found in the Iliad, where they are described as allies of the Trojans in the Trojan War against the Greeks. [Wikipedia]

In Kazanlak we toured a museum which had a small collection of embroideries from the Kazanlak area ...

... and some artifacts from the royal tombs.

Just outside of town is the Tomb of Kazanlak (4th century BC). These pictures are from the ceiling of the tomb.

We stopped for a picnic lunch in park a little further up the road. This church was in the park.

After lunch we drove to the Royal Tomb of Seauthos. This is the view from inside the tomb.

And this is the bronze head from a staue of a man that was found just outside the tomb.

We then drove the rest of the way to Nesebar on the Black Sea. We stopped for a pit stop along the way and this was the sign on the WC.
