Barcelona

This is Casa Mila. It was the last private residence designed by architect Antoni Gaudí and was built between 1906 and 1912.

This is Casa Amatller. It is right beside Casa Batlló and was designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch between 1898 and 1900.

Barcelona just has fantastic architecture everywhere you look.

Sadly that is the end of our trip.

Casa Batlló

We took a tour of Casa Batlló today - pretty amazing. It was designed by Antoni Gaudí, and is considered one of his masterpieces. A remodel of a previously built house, it was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudí. The ground floor, in particular, has unusual tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. There are few straight lines and much of the façade is decorated with a colorful mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencadís). [Wikipedia]

It was very crowded when we were there so it was very difficult to get good photos. There is a lot more information about it on the Wikipedia website (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Batlló) and some excellent photos in the photo gallery.

The windows and ceiling of the noble floor

This cosy little fireplace is also on this floor.

Stained glass bits are everywhere.

The center of the building has an elevator with stairs and landings spiraling around it in the center of a pair of lightwells with an atrium at the top.

The woodwork is gorgeous.

The loft is considered to be one of the most unusual spaces. It was formerly a service area for the tenants of the different apartments and contained laundry rooms and storage areas. [Wikipedia]

This is the roof with its distinctive chimneys. (The top of the atrium is in the foreground on the right.)

Even the pavement on this street is amazing. It was designed in 1904 by Gaudi for the floors in the Casa Batllo, but in the end it was decided to place them in the service rooms of Casa Mila (see next post). It was installed on the street in 1997.

Mercat de Sant Josep Boqueria

We wandered through an amazing market this morning. Wish this was a lot closer to my house! It was huge!
