Luzern

We spent another day exploring Luzern.

I had to start off with another shot of this wonderful bridge. This is the famous Chapel Bridge, a 204 m (669 ft) long wooden covered bridge originally built in 1333, and the oldest covered bridge in Europe. Sadly much of it had to be replaced after a fire on 18 August 1993.

We found a lot more interesting buildings. Notice the cute dragons holding tails (upper left).

And this one built around a tower.

With a cool dragon on the side.

And then a bit of whimsy.

How about this addition?

In Luzern the Ruess River flows out of Lake Luzern and the city is responsible for preventing the flooding of downstream villages. They devised this extendable dam that they can add spikes to or remove spikes from to control the flow of water.

In the distance is Luzern's other covered wooden bridge, the Mill Bridge, constructed in 1408. The bridge has many 17th century paintings hanging just under the roof. Each painting includes at least one skeleton. These scenes were reminders that nobody, in any walk of life, can escape death. How cheerful!

Wow!

We also visited another church.

Part of the orignal city walls built in the 13th century, including nine towers, still exist today. We wandered around there as well.

The best part was the clock tower which houses the city’s oldest clock, built in 1535, plus several other old clocks.

And to finish off, here are a few more fun bits.

  1. Amazing decorative buildings. If this doesn't make one want to visit there -- I can't imagine there is anything that would! It sounds like you are having a great time!
