Lugano & Morcote

Today was a free day in Lugano. This city is in the Italian section of Switzerland so everyone speaks Italian and there is pasta and pizza everywhere. Here are a few of the fun architectural tidbits we encountered.

There are also quite a few beatiful churches. This is the Church of San Rocco. Its frescoes celebrate the saint responsible for protecting the city against the plague.

This is the ceiling.

This is another of the churches, the Church of St. Mary of the Angels.

In the afternoon we took a boat to Morcote to see the parish church of Santa Maria del Sasso, built in the 13th century. Getting to the church requires climbing 400 steep stairs laid out in 1732.

The free-standing campanile dates from 1539.

And this is a separate chapel behind the church, the Chapel Sant' Antonio do Padova, which was built in 1676.

And its ceiling.

While on the lake we passed the Casinò di Campione, the largest casino in Europe, which enjoys special legal privileges, granted by Mussolini when he saw what casino tourism had done for nearby Lugano.

And this beautiful place.

This one has what is referred to in real estate as "location, location, location".

Back in Lugano there was a wine and food festival going on so we spent the evening wandering around sipping wine and listening to some great music
