Berner Oberland

Today we are in the Berner Oberland in the Swiss Alps. Here is a map of the area.

We are spending two nights in Mürren (located just below center on the map). Our hotel ...

... and the town of Mürren are very picturesque.

We are surrounded by mountains, specifically the Eiger (13,026 ft), the Mönch (13,449 ft), and the Jungfrau (13,642 ft). This was the view from our hotel room balcony when we arrived (click on the picture for a bigger image). Mürren is in the lower left corner.

From Mürren this is the view of the Eiger (in the center of the picture) and the Mönch (toward the right).

And this is the Jungfrau (the tallest).

From Mürren it takes two cable car rides to get up to the Schilthorn and the Piz Gloria restaurant which was featured in the James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

The James Bond theme can be seen throughout the building. These are the doors in the men's ...

... and women's WCs.

From the observation deck there are great views of the three famous mountains.

This is the view looking down toward Birg, the midpoint between the two cable car rides up to the Shilthorn.

Birg has its own attractions such as the Thrill Walk. This is looking down at it from Birg.

And this is looking back at Birg from tne cable car. That line across the mountain is the Thrill Walk.

This is the view from the cable car that goes from Mürren down to the valley floor. This was thrilling enough for me. That is the cable car shadow on the rocks.

In the afternoon we went to see the Trümmelbach waterfalls. WOW! This is the description at the falls.

I took a few photographs but they don't begin to do it justice. The noise from the falls was deafening and our ears were ringing by the time we left. Since this time of year will have the lowest volume of water we couldn't image what it must be like in the spring.
