Bern

We had all day to explore Bern, founded in 1191. It is an interesting city on a peninsula with the river Aare surrounding it on three sides.

The 15th century cathedral with its 330 ft tall tower is the highest in Switzerland.

There were several other churches in town. This one had a great roof.

This one had a cool spire.

And this one had an unusual ceiling.

Bern is the German word for bear and there are bear statues everywhere as well as three of the real things.

This is the town hall ...

... with this goofy guy on the wall.

Here are some more goofy faces I found on a building. I especially like the guy on the right.

And then there is this one.

There are also 11 historic 16th century fountains supplying clean drinking water from springs.

And my personal favorite, the baby-eating ogre.

I found a few more signs.

And this cute guy.
