Zurich, Switzerland

We spent the day in Zurich. This is a beautiful place at any time of the year but in December it is really magical.

In Zurich they go all out for Christmas. The streets are decorated with millions of lights. They hang in endless curtains from wires suspended six stories above the street.

There are several streets with market stalls selling mulled wine, pastries, jewelry, handmade toys and candles, and much, much more.

One unusual feature is the famous Singing Christmas Tree, a special stage in the shape of a Christmas tree, on which choirs perform daily (each of the orange blots below is a singer).

Almost every shop is beautifully decorated as well. This is a small chocolate shop where we were 'forced' to purchase some kirsch-filled truffles to enjoy while we walked.

In Zurich's main train station is Europe's largest indoor Christmas market. More than 160 festively decorated market stands provide plenty of gift ideas. In the middle of the huge station hall is a giant 45 foot Christmas tree with more than 5000 Swarowski crystal ornaments.

I wish I had had more time in this beautiful city.

  1. The Zurich chocolate shop reminds me of the Fudge Factory at Apple Hill, which we usually visit this time of year - but haven't yet this year. Only the Zurich shop is much more festive.
