Bernina Express, Switzerland

Yesterday we took the train from Horgen, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy. It took over 5 hours and the second half of the journey was on the Bernina Express which has domed observation cars with extra large windows that extend over part of the roof so you can see the Alps towering above you. We went across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels, by the Morteratsch glacier, and across the Bernina Pass, where the highest point is 7,392 feet in altitude. The scenery was indeed spectacular and not easily captured in a photograph because of the lack of scale.

We then took the train back the short distance to Poschiavo and spent the night in a hotel there. Poschiavo is a lovely small town with lots of beautiful old buildings. This morning we took a walk around town before catching the train back toward Horgen. This is just one of the pretty little churches we saw.

Along the way we got off the train at Pontresina to get some lunch. This is another lovely little town with interesting buildings to look at. Here is an example.

The temperatures were in the 20s F and we saw several spectacular frozen waterfalls.

Back in Horgen there is now over a foot of snow!

  2. Absolutely incredibly beautiful. I feel like I am there -- feeling mighty cold. I think I will put the fireplace on so I get the best of both worlds.

Enjoy! (I hope you are sampling the wines....)
