Passau, Germany

Passau, also known as Dreiflüssestadt (City of Three Rivers), is located where the Danube meets the Inn and the Ilz rivers. Settled since prehistory and a former hub of the salt trade, it became the Roman village of Batavis, then later the Holy Roman Empire’s largest diocese and a sword-making center. It has many cool historic sites and narrow lanes.

Saint Stephan’s Cathedral, built from 1668 to 1693, is a masterpiece of Italian Baroque and the home of one of the world’s largest cathedral organs with 17,774 pipes and 233 registers.

In front of the Cathedral was Passau's Christmas market.

  1. That cathedral is absolutely breathtaking. I need to show the boys your photos as we are studying this period in history.

  2. With all those pipes in the cathedral organ, the sound must be breathtaking. How long would it take to learn to play an organ with 233 registers?
