Nuremberg, Germany

Today we visited Nuremberg. What a great city! It is one of the few cities with a nearly complete medieval wall with a moat. The wall is over 3 miles long, had 5 gates located around the city (4 of the gates are still standing) and 46 fortified towers. Throughout the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries the wall was continually strengthened and improved and today over eighty towers can be found along its length.

In the picture below, the back half of the small building in the center houses a well and the front half of the building is where the keeper of the well lived.

The main square of the town has a fantastic fountain (named Schöner Brunnen) which was erected around 1385.

And an oh-so-interesting church overlooking the Christmas market. This is the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) which was built between 1352 and 1362.

  1. I'll bet that medieval wall has lots of passageways and hidden rooms. And what a cool house where the well keeper lived.
