Blythe House (V&A Museum)

Our visit to Blythe House was spectacular. Blythe House is where the V&A Museum stores their textile collection these days. We had to request specific samplers in advance and decided to include ones from foreign countries as well as English ones. [Don't forget, you can click on a picture to see a larger version.]

This one was made in 1681 in England.

This one is from 1649 and English. The top band is particularly amazing. And I love the little pea pods in the second band.

This one is from Germany and was stitched in 1688.

This was made in 1661 in England. I love those people!

This was made in England between 1600 and 1650.

This is dated 1863 and is from Sweden.

This was made in the 19th century and is from Mexico.

This was made in 1660 in England.

This is from Spain and was made in the late 18th or early 19th century.

This is also from the 18th century and made in Spain.

This is the famous Jane Bostocke sampler from 1598. It is the earliest dated British sampler known to have survived,

I just love this next one. It is late 18th century and from the Netherlands.

This was made in 1618 in Germany. It is the earliest dated German sampler so far known. Three close-ups of some of the whitework patterns follow the main picture.

This was made between 1650 and 1675 in England. The pictures are of the whole casket, each of the four sides, and the top.

This casket is dated 1678 and was also made in England. I love the mermaid with the mirror and the lion.
