Paris

We did a bit of wandering in Paris today and visited the Place de la Concorde. With an area of 21.3 acres (8.64 hectares) it is the largest square in Paris. The center of the Place is occupied by a giant Egyptian obelisk decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of the pharaoh Ramesses II. It is one of two the Egyptian government gave to the French in the 19th century. The other stayed in Egypt. The obelisk once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple. It arrived in Paris on 21 December 1833. [Wikipedia]

There are two similar fountains nearby.

And also these cute lamp posts with lions in ships.

We also stopped by the Arc de Triomphe.

The real highlight of the day was a tour of the Palais Garnier Opera House which was built from 1861 to 1875.

This is the façade.

Inside is really amazing. The Grand Staircase ....

The ceilings of some of the corriders ....

And a floor ....

The Auditorium ....

And The Grand Foyer ....

  1. I am glad you made it to the Opera House. Words just can't do it justice -- but your pictures should do!
