Stirling Castle

On our way to Stirling Castle we stopped briefly at Inveraray Castle which was portrayed as Duneagle Castle for the Downton Abbey Christmas 2012 episode.

We also made a stop to see Loch Lomond, which is the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain by surface area.

Stirling Castle was very impressive. It is one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland. It sits atop Castle Hill and is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs. Up to 500 people could meet in the Medieval hall. The most extravagant event was a feast to celebrate the baptism of James VI's son, Henry, in 1594. A fully-rigged 5m-long (16ft) ship with 36 brass guns was wheeled in to serve the fish course. Most of the principal buildings date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This first picture is one of the views from the castle walls.

The exteriors of the buildings had some interesting stuff such as these unicorns on the roof.

And the interiors were amazing.

But the ceilings really stole the show.
