Ísafjörður, Iceland

Today we had a  scenic drive around Ísafjördur, the principal town of the Westfjords peninsula.

The fishing industry has traditionally been the main occupation of the town and is still important today.  Our first stop was at the Ósvör Maritime Museum, a replica of an old fishing outpost  which is reminiscent of the old days of rowboat fishing until the beginning of the 20th century.

This is a typical outfit worn by the fishermen.  The clothes were made of sheepskin for warmth and the shoes were made from cowhide to protect the feet from the sharp rocks.  On display were also crew huts, a salt hut, and a drying hut.

The drying hut ...

And since no field trip would be complete without a waterfall .... this one is just a short distance from town.

Also just outside of town is Naustahvilft, also known as a troll seat.  A troll seat is a large depression in the mountain where a troll obviously sat down to rest.
