Viana do Castelo, Portugal

We started the day with a visit to the Museo do Traje, the costume museum. It was an excellent museum and we had a guided tour of the collection. Unfortunately, photos were not allowed. However, a small market was set up in a nearby square and several people were there in traditional costumes.

The museum had a small sampler of the limited number of stitch types that were allowed in the authentic local embroidery.

A 7-minute funicular ride up the nearby Santa Lucia Mountain took us to the Santa Lucia Basilica where a wedding was in progress.

This is the view from the Basilica.

The hotel we are staying at is rather interesting. It is in a sanctuary called Bom Jesus do Monte (Good Jesus of the Mount) in Braga. It was a pilgrimage site and has a monumental Baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters (381 feet).

The big sculptures in the center of each level are fountains dedicated to various things such as the five senses: Sight, Smell, Hearing, Touch, and Taste and the Three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity.

The posts at the bottom of the stairs are spiral fountains with snakes spitting water at the top.

The church at the top of the stairs was built in the early 1800s.

This garden is also on the grounds.
