Barcelos Portugal

The plan today was to go to Porto to have a look around the town and to have a tour and tasting at a port wine producer. However, it turned out that the Porto half marathon run was also scheduled for today so the town was in a bit of turmoil. We decided to give up and went on to Barcelos instead.

Barcelos's claim to fame is as the birthplace of the cute rooster that has become the symbol of Portugal.

There is a carved stone cross on the grounds of a ruined palace that illustrates the story.

A gallery in town had a wonderful display of artistic versions of o galo de Barcelos ("the Rooster of Barcelos"). Here are some of them:

And apparently a regular Sunday event in Barcelos is for the locals of all ages to come to the town square to dance. I love it!
