Segesta & Erice

Today we first visited Segesta, one of the major cities of the Elymians who were one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily.  Archeological ruins are its claim to fame.

Afterwards we drove to Erice to visit Pasticceria Maria Grammatico.  Here we were treated to a buffet lunch followed by a traditional Sicilian pastry making lesson.  Maria made one of her specialties:  tette delle monache (“nuns’ breasts”).

She also made another version of the almond-based pastry and some fresh cannoli.  Yum!

We next drove to Erice to see the beautiful Mother Church.

The town is quite unique and beautiful.
