Teatro Massimo, Italy’s largest opera house (and Europe’s third-largest), took 22 years to build and was inaugurated on May 16, 1897. This detailed wooden model was used by the architect to win the commission. The huge theater has a 2 acre footprint.
The outer ceiling panels can be manually opened from above to provide ventilation.
The exterior of the theater is especially impressive at this time of year.
Palermo has several street markets selling everything from fabric and suitcases to fruits, vegetables, flowers, and fish.
