We changed hotels to one further north today so we spent a lot of the day driving. We stopped off in Alençon on the way. Unfortunately it was raining quite a bit so we didn't have a lot of opportunity to sightsee.
Alençon is known for its world-famous lace, and rightly so. It is incredible. In the 1600s there were thousands of lace workers in the Alençon area. Today there are seven lace makers who are the only ones in the world to possess the knowledge to produce Alençon lace. The production of Alençon lace is carried out in 10 stages and 1 sq cm of lace takes, on average, seven hours of work (1 sq-inch takes 45 hrs!!!!!).
Here are some examples.
And here are a few of the sights around town.
Gargoyles on one of the churches.
