Kobarid, Slovenia to Motovun, Croatia

We traveled through some of Slovenia's wine country today on our way to the hill town of Motovun, Croatia, where we are spending the night in a former castle.

Along the way we stopped at a little village ...

... that had a really cute church. I love the colors!

Our lunch today was a three course meal at a winery! Nice! Each course was accompanied by an excellent wine. Really nice!

This is our guide, Sašo, (on the left) with the winemaker.

We arrived in Motovun at about 6:30 pm so there was no daylight left for pictures of this amazing place. I did take this one of the square after dark.

Motovun is a medieval town that grew up on the site of an ancient city called Kastelijer. It is situated on a hill 270 metres (886 feet) above sea level with houses scattered all over the hill. The river Mirna flows below the hill and on the other side of the river there is the famous Motovun forest, an area of about 10 square kilometres (4 sq mi) in the valley of the river Mirna, of which 280 hectares (690 acres) is specially protected. This area differs completely not only from the nearby forests, but also from those of the entire surrounding region because of its wild life and the moist soil which is especially suited to growing prized black and white truffles (Tuber magnatum).
