Lucca is a fortress town surrounded by an intact Renaissance-era wall.
The walls became a pedestrian promenade and today each of the four principal sides is lined with a different tree species.
Lucca used to have a Roman amphitheater (which seated 10,000). The amphitheater has since been repurposed as a piazza with apartments, shops, and restaurants.
